How to save money on OSAGO policy – the most effective ways

In 2023, OSAGO tariffs have become more differentiated, and the reform of the “car citizen” is focused on ensuring that its cost is adequate for car owners. It will not be possible to overpay for compulsory insurance provided that all the parameters that directly affect pricing are analyzed. Consider the question of how to save money on an OSAGO policy in more detail.

Methodology for calculating the cost of “autocitizenship”

The owner of the car can save on OSAGO if he knows the formula by which the cost of the mandatory insurance program is determined. The calculation method includes the following parameters:

  • BT (basic tariff);
  • KBM (coefficient of accident-free driving);
  • KM (auto power factor);
  • CT (territorial coefficient);
  • FAC (coefficient of age and experience);
  • KS (seasonal factor);
  • KO (coefficient of restriction of persons allowed to drive a vehicle).

Base rate

The insurance company independently sets the rate at which the cost of the “car insurance” is calculated. But the government recommends minimum and maximum tariff thresholds that all companies should be guided by. The Central Bank of the Russian Federation adheres to the tactics of expanding the corridor – simultaneously reducing the minimum size of BT for passenger cars (is 1,646 rubles) and increasing the maximum (is 7,535 rubles).

With such a spread in the base rate, the driver can save on OSAGO insurance by monitoring and comparing offers in several companies. Competition in the market forces insurers to offer the most favorable conditions for customers, so the car owner has to choose budget options from the entire list. But it must be taken into account that after the expansion of the tariff corridor of the Central Bank, the question of how to save money on OSAGO for a driver without experience remains open. The state has increased BT for new car owners.

In general, to search for dumping insurers, you can focus on the average OSAGO premium calculated by the ASN.

accident rate

This ratio is called “bonus-malus”. If the driver has not made a single accident during the year, he has every chance to issue an OSAGO at a bargain price. The minimum MSC threshold is 0.46 (for those who have not been in a road accident for 10 years), and the maximum is 3.92. The number of accidents on the roads increases the coefficient. During the initial registration of the policy, the owner of the car is assigned a KBM in the amount of 1.17.

An accident with minimal damage, in which the client was damaged, for example, a far-view mirror or a bumper was scratched, can not be registered, provided that it is possible to negotiate with other participants in the accident, and the health of people is not harmed. But one should not rule out the risk that the injured party will take the money and then claim that the perpetrator intentionally left the scene of the accident.

If several drivers are included in the policy, then in the absence of accidents involving the client, KBM applies to all. But this rule does not apply to “open” insurance, when the owner entrusts the management of the car to an unlimited number of people.

Conclusion – saving on OSAGO is possible, even if a person does not have his own car, but he plans to purchase it in the future. It is enough to ask a relative or friend to enter the data in the policy. But you need to take into account the negative point: if the car gets into an accident, then KBM will increase the cost of compulsory insurance.

Auto power

KM varies from 0.6 to 1.6. The minimum threshold is aimed at cars with an output of less than 50 hp, and the maximum threshold is for cars with an engine power exceeding 150 hp. Since saving on OSAGO for a novice driver is a paramount task, he should not neglect the specified coefficient. By choosing a car model, for example, with a power of 145 hp, you can save up to 20% of the budget allocated for insurance.

Geographic location

CT is determined taking into account the degree of complexity of the operation of the vehicle in a particular region. The minimum threshold of the territorial coefficient (0.6) is applied in Yakutia, Khakassia, Tyva. The maximum value (2.1) is set for Murmansk. CT can vary significantly in settlements located close to each other. If in the regional centers it reaches values of 1.8–2, then in suburban locations, remote at a distance of 5–10 km from the city, the coefficient decreases to 0.8. This way of saving on OSAGO is also aimed at novice car owners who cannot count on discounts for driving experience. To get an OSAGO cheaper, you can register in a village with a low CT or register a vehicle for a close relative living outside the city.

Age and experience of drivers

The savings formula is simple – the more experienced and older the driver, the lower the FAC. For novice car owners, an increased FAC is provided. But in practice, no one can calculate how many people are actually driving, so the time period from the issuance of the first driver’s license to the present day serves as a guideline.

In a situation where an aged driver with a minimum driving experience applies for a policy, he will have to pay more than a person who received a license 10 years ago.

PICs are officially recorded in a special table, which can be found by every person who is allowed to drive a car.

Example: if three people are indicated in the policy: 19, 24 and 32 years old with driving experience of 1.5 years, 3 years and 4.5 years, respectively, then the youngest age and the least experience will be taken into account.

The cost of the OSAGO policy depends on whether the client plans to drive a car year-round or selectively in certain months. The coefficient varies in the range from 0.5 to 1. If you reduce the operation of transport for three months, you will save up to 7-8%, for six months – up to 30%, and for nine months – up to 50%. In order to save the budget, new car owners can only indicate the warm season (from April to October). If there is such an opportunity, then in the winter it is better to operate the crossover, indicating in the policy the time period from November to March.

Number of persons admitted to management

KO is determined taking into account the type of compulsory insurance. For “open” OSAGO (an unlimited number of drivers can be entered), a value of 1.94 is provided. The cost of “closed” format insurance (limited list of drivers) is calculated with a coefficient of 1.

How companies change their pricing policy and why the “bonus-malus” can increase regardless of the number of accidents

According to market experts, one of the common reasons for the increase in the cost of OSAGO is the expansion of the corridor for the base rate. When calculating the cost of a policy, company managers are guided by a rate that is close to the maximum BT threshold. From the point of view of the law, there are no violations in such pricing: the insurance company has the right to individually choose a tariff within the corridor established by the Central Bank. In practice, it turns out that even with a decrease in the “bonus-malus”, the insurance program can rise in price for the client.

Technical failures in the SAR AIS system, which is not always integrated with long-term data, can also cause the company to apply the wrong “bonus-malus” in the calculations. The insurer’s managers can increase the MBA after the client has changed his driver’s license or changed his last name. They simply forget that the owner of the car updated the documents, and did not receive them for the first time. As a result, customers with a long driving experience are calculated the cost of OSAGO, taking into account the increased KBM.

The situation is aggravated by the fact that most insurers do not consider it necessary to check the data and arrogantly agree with the proposed calculations. And information about the “bonus-malus” coefficient can always be checked, since they are posted in the public domain – on the PCA website.

If the specified parameter used in the calculation of the cost of OSAGO has increased, then the “human factor” cannot be excluded. If you suspect a mistake on the part of the counterparty, you must write a statement to the insurance company. In some cases, you can not do without bureaucratic formalities: in order to restore justice, you will have to provide all copies of the mandatory insurance that were issued in the past.

Unscrupulous insurers often deliberately do not take into account the experience of transport management and use in the calculations the KBM that is assigned to novice car owners. A similar precedent has already happened in one of the top companies in the insurance market. As punishment for the violation, the license of the commercial structure was suspended for two weeks.

To save on OSAGO costs, follow simple recommendations: compare prices in different companies, follow a careful driving style, indicate drivers with at least three years of experience in the policy, and if you haven’t purchased a car yet, choose a model with not the highest engine power.
